Our History
Dr. Pierre Mourad, a research associate professor in the University of Washington Department of Neurological Surgery, has made his living finding novel medical applications for ultrasound and its ability to transform bubbles into miniature sources of mechanical energy. While giving his two children a bubble bath, cleaning his car or doing the dishes he often thinks about how bubbles, with the help of ultrasound, could be used as tools to assist people with their everyday cleaning tasks. It was in that context when an idea surfaced – what would happen if you applied ultrasound technology to a power toothbrush? For years, Mourad, who also serves as a principal physicist at the Applied Physics Laboratory had been discouraged by the cleaning ability of his ordinary power toothbrush. He wondered if ultrasound, something he manipulates every day, could transform ordinary bubbles into pulsating bubbles that could help remove plaque bacteria and produce a deep, long-lasting feeling of clean.
It was a revolutionary idea. In 2003, Mourad and Jack Gallagher, founder of Ultreo, Inc. and former president of Optiva Corporation (developers of Sonicare®), discussed the idea. Together they forged the way for Ultreo®, a toothbrush that combines the power of ultrasound with sonic technology to provide a feeling of clean beyond conventional brushing.
Mourad and a team of scientists and engineers at the University of Washington conducted extensive research, development and testing of this novel concept. Ultreo now has 2 U.S. patents issued, an additional 7 U.S. patents pending and has been awarded 3 research grants from the Washington Technology Center as well as 2 more from the National Institutes of Health. Altogether, the grants total nearly $2 million which was added to an additional $23 million raised from private investors, including more than 35 dentists, many alumni from the University of Washington Dental School. Ultreo is proudly made in the USA (Redmond, WA).
Today, clinical studies prove Ultreo removes up to 95 percent of hard-to-reach plaque in the first minute of brushing, reduces gingivitis and naturally removes stains for whiter teeth. Also, in a recent study 8 out of 10 respondents who expressed a preference thought the overall cleaning provided by Ultreo was better, and 8 out of 10 said they would switch to Ultreo from the power toothbrush they were using before the study.
Sonicare® is a registered trademark of Philips Oral Healthcare, Inc.
